Best Free Pharmacy Billing Software in India (2026)
Updated 4 July 2026 · 6 min read
Every chemist shop needs to print a GST-compliant bill, track which batch went out the door, and know what's about to expire. Plenty of software promises this "for free" — then meters your invoices, locks reports behind a plan, or stops working the moment the internet drops. Here's how to tell real free software from a trial in disguise.
What "free" should actually mean
The word gets stretched. Before you install anything, check it against these five points — this is the checklist that separates genuinely free tools from bait:
- Unlimited invoices. If there's a monthly bill cap ("free up to 50 invoices"), it isn't free — it's a trial with a countdown.
- No feature paywall on the essentials. GST bills, batch & expiry, and basic reports are table stakes. If those sit behind "Pro", the free tier is a demo.
- Works offline. A power cut or a dead broadband line should not stop you from billing a customer standing at the counter.
- Your data is yours. You should be able to keep and export your own catalog, stock, and sales — not have them held hostage on someone's server.
- No card required to start. Real free software downloads and runs. It doesn't ask for a credit card "just to verify".
The features a pharmacy genuinely needs
Ignore the long feature lists. For a retail chemist counter, the software only has to do a handful of things well:
1. Fast GST billing
A proper tax invoice with your GSTIN, HSN codes, and the CGST/SGST split, printed in seconds. The slowest part of a busy counter is billing — the software should make it faster, not slower. (We wrote a full guide on the GST-compliant medical bill format.)
2. Batch & expiry tracking
Medicine isn't groceries. The same product has many batches, each with its own expiry and MRP. Software that can't track stock at the batch level will quietly cost you money in expired write-offs. (More on managing batch numbers and expiry.)
3. Schedule-drug prompts
Schedule H, H1, and X drugs carry recording obligations. Good software nudges you at the point of sale so compliance isn't something you have to remember.
4. Reports you can act on
Daily sales, GST summary for filing, fast/slow movers, and stock value. These shouldn't be a paid add-on — they're how you run the shop.
Cloud vs. offline: why it matters for the price
A lot of "free" pharmacy software is a cloud service. That's fine until the connection drops mid-sale — or until the free plan's server limits kick in and the upgrade prompt appears. Offline-first software runs on your own PC, bills with or without internet, and syncs later when there's signal. It's also cheaper to keep free, because there's no per-shop server cost to recover. We compare the two approaches in why DravyaOS.
Where DravyaOS fits
We built DravyaOS to be the free option that doesn't have an asterisk. It's a native Windows app that runs entirely offline, rings up GST-compliant invoices from the keyboard, tracks every batch and expiry, and prompts on schedule drugs — with no invoice cap and no locked reports. It syncs to the cloud only if you want it to.
Free, forever. No card, no invoice limit, works offline.

The best free pharmacy billing software is the one that bills GST invoices without a cap, tracks batches and expiry, keeps working when the internet doesn't, and lets you keep your own data. Hold any tool up to that checklist before you commit your shop to it.
